At Oakdene Primary Academy, every child is an artist. We believe that all children should leave OPA with a deep love for Art and Design and the confidence to see themselves as illustrators, graphic designers, curators, or printmakers. Our curriculum is carefully crafted to build pupils’ artistic capital, nurturing creativity, imagination, and self-expression.
We want our children to remember their Art and Design lessons with joy and pride—cherishing the experiences, opportunities, and creative freedom they are given. Art is not just a subject; it is a powerful vehicle for personal growth, cultural understanding, and future aspirations.
As Pablo Picasso once said:
“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”
And as Maya Angelou beautifully expressed:
“You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.”
We aim to keep that spirit alive and flourishing in every classroom.
Our curriculum is designed to engage, inspire, and challenge pupils. We follow the Kapow Primary Art Scheme, which ensures progression in skills and knowledge across all year groups. Teachers are supported through targeted CPD, regular learning walks, and external partnerships with local artists and arts organisations.
Pupils at Oakdene develop a strong foundation in visual language—confidently using line, shape, pattern, colour, texture, and form to express emotions, interpret observations, and convey insights. They draw adventurously from observation, memory, and imagination, and communicate fluently in visual and tactile forms.
Our children demonstrate:
Independence, initiative, and originality in their creative work
A deep understanding of artists, craft makers, and designers
The ability to reflect, analyse, and evaluate their own work and that of others
A passion for and commitment to the subject
Art at Oakdene is more than a curriculum - it is a celebration of creativity, identity, and possibility. It is central to our vision of a rich, inclusive, and empowering education.
