At Oakdene Primary Academy, we believe that learning a foreign language is an essential part of a broad and balanced curriculum. All children in Key Stage 2 are taught French as part of their weekly timetable. We aim to foster a love of language learning and an appreciation of other cultures, helping pupils to become confident communicators and global citizens.
We recognise that early exposure to a foreign language supports the development of listening and speaking skills, enhances memory, and positively impacts literacy in English. Our curriculum is designed to prepare pupils for a rapidly changing world where multilingualism is increasingly valued in both personal and professional contexts.
We deliver a high-quality French curriculum using the Kapow Primary scheme of work, which provides structured, progressive lessons aligned with the National Curriculum. Lessons are taught weekly by class teachers and are supported by Kapow’s comprehensive resources, including videos, interactive activities, and differentiated materials.
Key features of our implementation include:
Progressive skill development in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
Age-appropriate topics and themes that build vocabulary and grammatical understanding.
Use of incidental language throughout the school day (e.g., greetings, instructions, praise).
A “phrase of the week” initiative to promote everyday use of French across the school.
Opportunities for cultural exploration, helping pupils understand the customs and traditions of French-speaking countries.
Our curriculum ensures that pupils make clear progress in their language learning journey. Kapow’s structured units increase in complexity, allowing children to build on prior knowledge and develop fluency and confidence over time.
By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils will:
Be able to understand and respond to spoken and written French.
Use a growing bank of vocabulary and grammatical structures to express themselves.
Formulate short conversations and written pieces using conjunctions, adjectives, opinions, and justifications.
Demonstrate an awareness of their own progress through self-assessment opportunities and pupil-friendly learning objectives.
Teachers use Kapow’s assessment tools to monitor progress against the DfE Languages Programme of Study for KS2, ensuring that teaching is targeted and effective. Assessment data is recorded and reviewed by the MFL Subject Leader, who uses it to inform planning, support staff, and report to SLT and stakeholders.
Pupils keep learning intention sheets and vocabulary records to track their progress and reflect on their achievements. This supports long-term retention and helps pupils articulate their learning journey.
