At Oakdene Primary Academy, we believe that every child deserves access to a rich and varied physical education experience. Through our curriculum, extra-curricular clubs, and active learning opportunities, we aim to foster a lifelong love of movement, promote positive attitudes towards health and wellbeing, and develop physical competence and confidence.
Our vision for PE at Oakdene is to enrich the lives of all pupils through active lifestyles and inclusive sporting opportunities. We strive to ensure every child can access a wide range of physical activities both within and beyond the school day. Pupils are encouraged to explore their interests and passions through participation in school-based clubs, local sporting events, and community sports organisations.
We use the Complete PE scheme of work to deliver a progressive and inclusive curriculum that supports skill development, physical literacy, and enjoyment. Additionally, Oakdene is proud to be part of the St Helen’s SHAPES PE offer, which enhances our provision through access to competitions, festivals, and CPD for staff.
Lessons are designed to be engaging and differentiated, allowing all children to succeed and progress. Units begin with practical activities that assess prior knowledge and inform future learning. The aim is for pupils to apply their skills in competitive or collaborative contexts, such as intra-school competitions or house challenges.
PE is delivered by class teachers and specialist coaches throughout the academic year. Our curriculum has been carefully mapped to ensure coverage of key skills and sports, with a focus on developing transferable skills across different physical activities.
Children in Upper Key Stage Two regularly participate in Level 2 competitions, and units are selected to prepare them for these events. Key Stage One pupils also access wider sporting opportunities, including informal festivals and practice sessions, to build confidence and readiness for future competition.
Recognising the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on children's physical fitness, we continue to prioritise vigorous physical activity and active learning to improve cardiovascular health and overall wellbeing.
At the end of each unit, teachers assess pupils using child friendly ‘I can’ statements aligned with the Complete PE framework. These statements support formative assessment and help children understand their progress.
Dance lessons offer opportunities for close observation and targeted feedback, while competitive games and challenges allow pupils to demonstrate their skills in real-world contexts.
We actively signpost children to external clubs and organisations to nurture their interests and extend their learning beyond school. Oakdene currently holds the Gold Sports Mark and is working towards achieving Platinum, with aspirations to reach even higher in the coming years.
