British Values

British Values at Oakdene Primary Academy

The Department for Education expects all schools to actively promote the fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

At Oakdene Primary Academy, these values are not taught in isolation—they are lived and experienced every day through our school ethos, curriculum and strong sense of community. Rooted in our vision of “Growing Through Excellence”, we ensure that all children develop the knowledge, skills and character to become thoughtful, responsible citizens.

Through our inclusive curriculum, programmes such as PATHS, JIGSAW and No Outsiders, and a strong emphasis on pupil voice, we provide meaningful opportunities for children to explore and apply these values in real-life contexts.

Our aim is for every child to leave Oakdene as a confident, respectful and socially aware individual, ready to contribute positively to life in modern Britain.

Democracy

At Oakdene, we actively promote pupil voice and participation. Children are encouraged to share their opinions, knowing they will be listened to and valued.

Our Pupil Leadership Team and School Council members give children authentic opportunities to influence decisions across the school.

Pupils take part in voting processes, helping them understand fairness and representation.

Regular pupil surveys and discussions ensure all voices are heard.

Through these experiences, children develop an understanding of democracy in action and the importance of contributing positively to their community.

The Rule of Law

We teach children that rules and laws are essential for creating a safe, fair and respectful society.

Our clear behaviour expectations and consistent routines help pupils understand boundaries.

Children learn about rights, responsibilities and consequences through everyday school life.

Links are made through PSHE, assemblies and visits to help pupils understand how laws support society.

At Oakdene, pupils understand that everyone has a role in maintaining a calm, safe and respectful environment for all.

Individual Liberty

We encourage children to develop independence, confidence and a strong sense of self.

Pupils are supported to make choices about their learning and friendships in a safe environment.

Through our curriculum and wider opportunities, children learn to express their ideas respectfully.

We promote resilience and responsibility, empowering pupils to understand their rights and make positive decisions.

Children at Oakdene are supported to flourish as individuals while recognising the importance of respecting the freedoms of others.

Mutual Respect

Respect is at the heart of everything we do at Oakdene.

Our Rights and Responsibilities underpin daily life and expectations across the school.

Pupils learn to treat others with kindness, empathy and fairness.

Positive relationships between staff, pupils and families foster a strong sense of belonging.

We actively promote a culture where every individual is valued, and differences are recognised as strengths.

Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs

Oakdene is a diverse and inclusive community where differences are celebrated.

Through RE, PSHE, No Outsiders and assemblies, pupils learn about a wide range of faiths, cultures and perspectives.

We encourage open discussion, helping children to challenge stereotypes and understand others.

Our curriculum promotes inclusion, ensuring all pupils feel seen, respected and valued.

Children develop the understanding and empathy needed to thrive in a diverse and ever-changing world.
