Cultural Capital

Developing Cultural Capital at Our School

“Cultural knowledge that serves as a form of currency, enabling individuals to navigate society and access opportunities.”

— Pierre Bourdieu

At our school, we understand that every child begins their journey with a rich set of personal experiences. These are shaped by their family life, community, culture, interests and the wider world around them. This may include the languages they speak, their traditions, beliefs, hobbies and life experiences.

We celebrate and value these differences. By recognising what pupils already know and have experienced, we are able to build upon this foundation and extend their understanding of the world.

What Do We Mean by Cultural Capital?

Cultural capital refers to the knowledge, understanding, skills and experiences that children gain over time. It equips them with the tools they need to communicate confidently, make informed decisions, and engage fully in modern society.

The development of cultural capital supports pupils to:

 ·        Grow in confidence and raise their aspirations

·        Develop a secure sense of identity and belonging

·        Succeed academically and in future education or employment

·        Access opportunities regardless of their background

Through carefully planned opportunities and experiences, we support pupils to broaden their horizons and deepen their understanding of the world beyond their immediate environment.

Cultural Capital Through Our Curriculum

Our curriculum is designed to provide pupils with both essential knowledge and meaningful experiences. We aim to develop well-rounded individuals who are thoughtful, informed and active members of society.

Children are introduced to a diverse range of perspectives, cultures and ideas. This helps them to develop respect for others, appreciate diversity, and understand their role within both their local community and the wider world.

Cultural capital is not taught as a standalone subject. Instead, it is woven throughout everyday learning, enrichment opportunities and interactions both in and beyond the classroom.

Our Approach

We recognise that cultural capital develops over time through a combination of different aspects of learning and personal growth. At our school, we place particular emphasis on the following interconnected areas:

·        Personal Development – fostering confidence, independence and resilience

·        Social Development – building positive relationships and understanding others

·        Physical Development – encouraging healthy, active lifestyles and wellbeing

·        Spiritual Development – promoting reflection, curiosity and respect for different beliefs

·        Moral Development – supporting pupils to understand right and wrong and take responsibility

·        Cultural Development – celebrating diversity, heritage, creativity and the arts

  Our Commitment

Through our curriculum, values and enrichment experiences, we ensure that every child develops the knowledge, experiences and confidence they need to thrive. We are committed to opening doors, raising aspirations and preparing all pupils for life beyond school.
